A Day To Enjoy

Thanksgiving

Holidays are just funny occasions.

Sometimes people don't care what they are, just that for many they have time off from work and can kick back and rest a bit. They say home is where the heart is. Maybe that's why there's 38.7 million Americans traveling about on this day. Home is somewhere else.

Whether you're a turkey and dressing or ham kind of family, or a sports bar single guy, or laid up in an apartment with a pizza, take it easy from the world on this day. I always thought the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving were so uniquely American in nature. How nice of the signers of the Declaration of Independence to coincide that effort in summer so we could have picnics, watermelon, and fireworks. Cool!

Then those Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians in 1621 got together for the first autumn feast, and as they say, it would never be the same again. So glance into the Norman Rockwell classic painting of this day and take time to enjoy the moment and the memories, whatever is happening this year for you and yours. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

Gary, my family and I were discussing Thanksgiving and dressing etc.  The photos always show the stuffed bird, like Norman Rockwell's painting, where the stuffing is inside the bird.  Our question in the South was where the rest of the dressing is?  I made turkey and made the dressing on the side, no stuffed turkey, because we want a LOT of dressing.  That bird cavity only allows a small amount!  Where's the rest?  Where's enough to feed 20 people!  : )

Your blogs are nice!  Thanks.

Once of the most relaxing days I have had this year, and yet I have still have a few voicemails.  I will check them later!  Now my kids are stuffed and almost asleep, I'm thinking of the soon to be turkey sandwich or should I eat a slice of peacan pie first, oh decisions to make.

Barbara: I think you have posed one of life's mysteries on how you get enough stuffing inside a bird to feed 20 people. Answer: Buy a really big bird. Actually the history behind those Rockwell paintings goes back to an FDR speech in January 1941 talking about the Four Freedoms (freedom of speech, freedom to worship, freedom from want (the Thanksgiving painting), and freedom from fear). Lots of history when you dig into these things.

Chad: Speaking of being stuffed for the day, they say it's not the tryptophan but too many carbs. A walk around the block after dessert might help all of us.

Gary, we had a great family day.  Normally we all get together for Chrismas but everyone came here this year as we thought our son was leaving for Iraq in December.  He is now not leaving until March but it got us all together early; normally we get together for Christmas.  We had a great turkey day; hope you did also.

Marchel: Take in the moments, as they become memories and be thankful for all you have. Godspeed to your son in March. Time for a second round of pumpkin pie!
