You Don't Need No Stinkin' Ruby Slippers

As the year draws to a close in the real estate world and life in general, we will hear those who want to start with a fresh slate make all sorts of resolutions and goal setting. Unfortunately, overriding those good intentions we have at a subconscious level a doubting voice which thinks we really can't accomplish them. Questions arise like: "I'll never be able to buy that house." "I can't sell my house in this market." "I never am able to lose weight." "I can't stop smoking." "I'm just not a good student." On and on we go.

So I've summed up a powerful underlying resolution all of us should make for the things we really do want to accomplish with the fresh page we are given at the start of the year. And that is to, "Give up your limiting beliefs." It has been said if you knew your true potential it would truly scare you. Why do you hold yourself back? Fear of failure? Fear of success? Fear that you lack the skill and tenacity to accomplish something? As I've gotten older I really believe in the slogan, "Just Do It!" Get off the fence and get to work. The reality is you can accomplish pretty much anything, if you BELIEVE you can. Work on that thought for the start of next month. And stick with it.

Ruby Slippers

I'll leave you with this image. Remember at the end of the Wizard of Oz, the good witch of the North told Dorothy that the magic was not in the power of the Ruby Slippers. She had the power all along, but just had to discover it. When she finally BELIEVED there was NO PLACE LIKE HOME, back to Kansas she went.

So know that you don't need any magical power, any motivation, any self-help book to get where you want to go. You've had the power all along. The SECRET: You must believe!!

Make THAT one of your resolutions. Get rid of any limiting beliefs!

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I get it, and you're right - but is it okay if I still WANT the ruby slippers?  : )  I think mine would look more like these, though:

Gary,

Not arguing with you, of course, but I think there is a powerful thing that changes our habits, behavior... everything. Being scared to death.

I have an older friend, who was smoking for, at least, 40 years. Laughed when people were telling him to quit. Was saying that he would die with a cigarette. He is a heavy, very heavy guy, and one morning he could not get from the bed, The doctor asked him whether he was a smoker, the guy told him his usual joke that he would die with a cigarette, and the doctor agreed. "You will die with a cigarette. And pretty soon, unless of course, you quit yesterday".

When my friend figured that this was serious, that this was not a joke, he got so scared, that he quit smoking right then and right there and never tried a cigarette after that. Remember, he was telling us that he could not quit, period.

This is just one example and I know several. The funny thing is that they tried to quit, with or without patches, hypnosis, some other interesting stuff, and they couldn't. And then quit, basta, and no problem. Just recently a friend suffered a massive heart attack, luckily he is an MD, so he knew what was happening to him and got to the Hospital in time. SO two weeks later I asked him if he still longed for smoking, he looked at me as if I was crazy and told me that not that he was scared of smoking, he was scared to think about doing it.

GARY - Now this is a New Year's resolution that I can get behind.  Like most people, I find this to be a reflective time, and a time for planning for the upcoming year.  Many resolutions are broken by a lot of people before we ever get out of January.  Your suggestion can begin right away.  We can all start believing that things will be better in 2008 right now.  No need to wait until January 1st.  Thanks for the inspiration.  I featured this post in Active Rain Addicts.

Don: Sometimes "secrets" are obvious to us when someone points them out. Good luck with your goals in Idaho.

Jon: Wow, what a story. I suppose fear is a great motivator as well as something that can hold us back.

Adam: Yes, we can start a resolution any time. Thanks for the feature.

Well I was just getting ready to order some ruby ballerina slippers that I don't think you can talk me out of.  Fabulous sale that I'm just not going to ignore. Loved your post!

Great motivational thoughts.  I can't be reminded of this enough and I thank you for doing so.  I've got a lot of changes to make in this next year, and a good push like this helps!

Great post - and thanks for the reminder. I always try and be a s positive as possible, and make each day as productive as I can. I do believe in the power of positive thinking, and in fact my daughters do as well. We often say to each other - "use the secret" - and honestly it does work.

Thanks again - Sharon

Gary, it is all about attitude.  I have a favorite story in the book the Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwarz.  It is a one handed golfer who was better than most two handed golfers. He said the right attitude and one hand will beat the wrong attitude and two hands any day.  I read that when I first got in sales 25 years ago and have loved that story ever since.

Gary, you are sooo right. It is within each of us. Just depends how we use it!. Sometimes it is pretty hard to believe but then try all the harder. I had forgotten about Dorothy... good model for 2008.

Thanks!

Marchel: What a great story in that book. If you believe you can, you can.

Jason: So true about thinking. Happy New Year.

Perrin: I brought up Dorothy as a reminder. Fake it if you have to till you make it.

Gary, Thanks for the great post.  Like you, Just Do It has become a favorite motto.  I've already made a list of my resolutions and put them on a poster board.  After reading this, I think I'll frame it with the words, Just Do It

Love the red shoes, too! But, I'm a sucker for red shoes. I wrote an article about how women buy red shoes. Basically, the premise is a woman will walk into the mall, spy the perfect pair of red shoes, but still feel determined to visit every other shoe store and department store to see if a better pair of red shoes exists. After spending several hours, often they end up back at the first store, buying that perfect pair. They do this because red shoes are special. But it's really a waste of time. When you spot something perfect, act on it. That's my motto.

I guess red shoes are special... never really thought of it that way.  They definitely aren't "every day" shoes.  I do have a perfect pair of red shoes... but always looking for more!  : )  Happy shoe shopping Elizabeth.

Elizabeth: Sounds like a great motto for a home buyer to stop shopping for "another" house once they found the one!

Chris: Red shoes definitely stand out like a red dress or outfit. Isn't that the "power" color for a woman?

I've had 4 businesses in my life and the difference between me succeeding where others have failed has always been that with me failure was not an option. I will succeed and I always have and always will. In life, marriage and what ever is presented to me.

Todd: That's a great attitude you have. With determination you are unstoppable.

Jon: I wonder if Nike wants royalties from everyone using their Just Do It slogan? It's a good one though.

Gary-You are so right.  We do have to BELIEVE in ourselves so that we can make that next important step in our lives.  You have put this so eloquently.  I love it!  The word BELIEVE is apart of our home.  I have it sitting on a shelf when you first walk in the front door. I painted the letters and gently placed them on the shelf, with each letter I would say another sentence with the word BELIEVE in it. When I'm having a moment of struggles, I simply walk by the shelf and look at it, then remind myself of what that word truly means in my life.  Happy New Year to you and I truly BELIEVE 2008 is going to be great!

Another great food for thought post Gary.

I believe attitude shapes your beliefs and mindset and if it's bad well what can one expect?  I believe it's a habit we create just like any other. We have the power to change any given moment or situation with our attitude.

To think of others before ourselves, to be grateful for where we are and to put ourselves in someone elses' shoes should be a habit we continually strive for and develop and put into practice. To be of service to others is one of the greatest callings and it's in the service to others we often find ourselves.

Karen: You are so right that what we give in service comes back to us. Oftentimes I've heard a technique to get people out of social depression is for them to get busy helping others. It is very revealing to them how helping others inevitably helps them.

Don't forget, you still have to tap your heels together 3 times, put the tapping effort in along with your faith and away you go.  Nothing against Kansas, but I'm thinking somewhere more tropical as I look out at my snow covered woods.
