In looking at really great real estate agents, whether they be in my local community, in my office, or on social networks I see one thing in common. They are all great at SERVICE.
There is a term typically coming from the faith based community called having a Servant's Heart.
These people outside their work environment are ALWAYS helping people. They bring food to shut-ins. They volunteer. They wash dogs with nappy hair. They visit the sick. They drive the neighborhood kids to soccer games. They go to nursing homes, hospitals and prisons.
I firmly believe they have such great spheres of influence from a business and social context because they have a love for people. They get referrals in real estate just because everyone knows they can be trusted, counted on and are authentic people with credibility.
So if many in real estate who struggle wonder what they should polish up on, I would say become a person of service. Adopt and wear a badge that you have a Servant's Heart. Practicing deliberate and "random" acts of kindness just makes the world a better place for all of us.

Very true, Gary... We should be an integral part of our communities. Volunteering is a noble endeavor though I hope people do it for the sake of volunteering and let the business come as it may. I know a couple who are involved JUST for the referral benefits and constantly complain that they never get any business from it... wrong attitude, in my book.
Gary,
Great thoughts! I am active delivering meals on wheels and 2 food pantry programs, and I peace and comfort in the service. My goal is to serve others, not to get something back. A "Servants Heart", desires to serve with out expecting praise or recognition.
Giving back to your local community is extremely important. Public service is to be encouraged and commended. Here is a wonderful quote that speaks directly to this:
Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.
-Muhammad Ali
Jesse & Kathy: It should be done without thinking of the referrals. That's the way the universe works.
Connie: Amen to you too.
Karen: Everyone likes win-win.
Carole: I love the pay it forward idea.
Julie: You are right. Giving makes live worth living.
Jan: Sometimes our time goes not in all the right places and we have to adjust.
Virginia: We all need to not get distracted. Excellent point.
Ray: What's funny is we do for others and we get more back for ourselves.
Colleen: Find the time is an on the mark comment. Very, very good.
Rich: A quote from "The Greatest", how sweet.
