Fear Factor

Fear FactorIn looking at buyer's remorse, a common phase in the real estate purchasing process where for a brief moment of time, the buyer has doubts about what they are doing, it made me think of that show Fear Factor. You know, that's the one where the contestants are constantly asked to perform more and more challenging frightening assignments to be the last one standing and win the grand prize.

In life there are many things that can frighten us and I must add rightfully so. But we are implored in life to fear not. Easier said than done.

Just think in the employment world how a boss can hold a performance standard or sales number over your head, OR ELSE, you're fired!! Kind of affects your family's security. What about in the self-employment world? Don't make enough money, you don't eat, feed the family, and make those mortgage payments.

So fear can be real and IS real. You have to work through it. Talk with others what you are going through and what I've found when it just gets overwhelming at times

                    LAUGH ABOUT IT

If you don't think laughing about it can help, then take a quick gander at the clip below. Laughter which is a universal feeling among all cultures as is a smile, serves to break the tension. It lets each of us know we are in this together. All at times feel the fear. But you'll get through it. Just hang on for the ride.

I would be in a complete state of shock, and probably not able to move...

Gary ~ I'm sorry, I was distracted by that really gross Fear Factor picture (what are those - little alligators?)!  I now have to go back and try to re-read your actual post. : )

Tom: Glad you liked the clip. Hopefully more will see it or pass the YouTube link along. It's a riot. We all can so much relate to it.

The other part of fear I see a lot is worry. People being concerned about stuff that usually never happens. I guess if we had a crystal ball and knew it "wasn't" going to happen we could stop putting all that wasted energy into worry.

Judy: I think buyer's remorse is a phase. If it is true remorse, that would be bad, like something obvious was missed before closing. Hopefully that happens very infrequently.

I've been afraid in my life but am usually able to overcome it.  The best book was The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale.  It inspired me when I was most fearful.

Barbara: Dr. Norman Vincent Peale was full of wisdom. That positive thinking can drive the black clouds away and give you an attitude that is the best one to cope with fear. Even Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the depths of the Depression said the only thing we had to fear was fear itself. He wanted the country to move past it.

Gary, I'm still stuck on the picture, that woman is nuts.    Fear can conquer us in so many ways if you let it.  We're suppose to go out with a group from Rodney Howard Brownes crusade tomorrow to witness and this is so out of both David's and my comfort zone, but we're going to feel the fear and do it anyway.  I'l have to let you know how it goes.

Bonnie: Getting up in front of people they say is more frightening than fear of dying. Let me know how it goes. I'm sure once you get started everything will be fine. We're all pulling for you. Think of all those workers in that video afraid of the boss and when he's away, hey, the pressure's off!!

Gary,

Where in the world did you get that photo?  Amazing, and not just for the alligators.  Imagine the pain associated with all those square inches of tatoo!

Mike: I have never understood the allure of tattoos, especially as you point out the pain to engrave them in your skin. But different strokes, my man.... the photo was a snapshot from an episode on the show.

I have been selling a great product to investors. But, the smaller or first time investors I have to explain that the fear of investing is worth it.  Real Estate, as we all know is a great way to achieve wealth.  If you can Invest for less than $20,000 and generate a positive cash flow, then take the fear, learn from it, and keep investing.

Fear is normal, buyer's remorse is normal.  I let my clients know to expect it and be comforted by it.  Then they can back up and truly assess what is occurring: is this just a normal gut check to overcome?  or, is this a serious red flag that we need to address?

Great Post, great photo, great video, Thanks!

Hi Gary, great analogy. I learned from someone a good way to look at the word F E A R.

F alse

Expectations

Appearing

Real

It is a mind set and we can overcome it. I truly believe in FAITH too and when that " fear factor feeling " isn't there, then I know it must be the right decision or course of action I'm taking. A true sense of calm takes over and it's described as "the peace which transcends all understanding".

Congrats on the featured post! Have a great weekend!

That was me yesterday! I know the feeling well. I thought I would totally freak out after I answered a phone call in the middle of writing an offer for a new client. I had to somehow hold it all together, act like nothing was terribly wrong, focus on what I was doing and write the offer. Later out in my car, alone, I had to figure out what to do. Our business is an emotional rollercoster from Hell sometimes!

It takes courage to overcome fear, and I think we can help our clients get past buyer's remorse by telling them to expect it.  I also like to share some funny remorse stories with them.  Laughter really is an effective cure!

Gary - Different people have different tolerance levels for fear. Some are able to face it and work through it, others can't.  For me it's a matter of examining the risk level, possible outcomes and consequences.

I loved the video. Great post!

Carole: Laughing sure does break up the mood doesn't it?

Charlie: You're welcome.

Mary: The first step is always the hardest.

Laurie: Yep, buyer's remorse is a phase. It is a big investment.

Karen: You are right, faith conquers fear.

Lizette: Sounds like you are a master at getting through the fear.

Norma: Sharing our experiences definitely can put others at ease.

Tom: If the little reptiles starting nipping that would not be fun.

Nice post!  We all have the fear factor from time to time.  Fortunately, I've been around long enough not to fear anything in this business and I am able to reassure my clients, always!  Laughter is truly the best outlet!

Great post.  In eleven years of law enforcement, I never experienced the uneasiness of some of the situations I have dealt with as an agent!

Keep it up!

I liked the video. Most fear in real estate is based on making a decision and having to take action. Having all available information does help in quelling fears.

I liked Fear Factor. I would have no problems with the stunts. But there is no amount if money in the world that could get me to eat anything they had to offer.
