No Place That Far

Faraway LandIn selling real estate it is about lifestyle. But it is not ONLY about lifestyle. It is about places too. You've probably heard that old phrase, well worn

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

But there are other places too. Places of our heart where if you work with some buyers and sellers over time you leave a little bit of yourself with them and they with you. It is that feeling of "family." Will they remain in your life forever? Most likely not. Some do. But a shared experience was exchanged. Time on this earth together.

I marvel at those in this industry who give meaning and excellent example to the world to the word "service."

Many come from the teaching profession. That nuturing, patient, educating talent is quite evident with how they handle people with a gentle, if not magical touch. And much like our own families the relationship develops like a young couple that matures and "would do anything for you." The feeling ends up mutual. It can be looked at like

NO PLACE THAT FAR   (reaching a shining level of giving and taking)

Comments

Yep it's all about location, lifestyle, comfort, "feelings", and then some! But after the sale, it's important to keep the connection, past clients/customers can be your best source of referrals for a job well done. Loved the way you put your words together in this post, like you were painting a vision for all of us. For those you have worked with, Gary, sounds like they were ever so fortunate to have someone who cared. - Carla

Gary:

I am flagging this post ... it needs a WARNING!!!  Readers must find the closest box of tissues BEFORE clicking on the link to the Sara Evans video.  I was not at all prepared for that emotional journey....... although it was beautiful and quite moving, a girl needs a little warning before she cries off all her makeup ... thank goodness I was home and not in the middle of a coffee shop someplace!  Really, Gary, what a great message. God bless....

Carla: I always care, as I am sure you do too. This is a caring profession, and those that don't care shouldn't be in it. I like your phrase painting a vision. I'm going to remember that. I always learn the most from you and others that comment.

Trey: I keep trying. Thanks for stopping by.

Jan: I love that song from Sara, and it has so much feeling about doing anything for the ones you really care about. Sorry, I should have put the tissue box warning out. God bless you.

Gary, great post and beautiful picture.  It give me something to work towards creating that bond between myself and clients.  Serving them is the only way that will come about.  Thank you for this info!

Gary -  lifestyle, location, family...we made the mistake several years ago to move as part of my husband's career path but it split our family up. I would take it back in a heartbeat and very soon we might one day soon move back. Your post is so exact -  that feeling of "family."....I might be torn between this decision soon but as far as family goes, nothing else can replace it!

hmm for some reason my video wouldn't open...but I know that song.......back to the living vicariously through country singers....sometimes I wonder about the 'caring emotional ' aspect of the business.  i've been told I get to emotionally involved with my clients......it would seem to me that the realtors that are more detached and 'business-like' seem to do better......maybe not with your individual home owner, but definitely with builders, developers ...maybe they don't have the same type of 'relationships'...but heck it seems they don't have as much difficulty in making the mortgage payments....smile........ok maybe its a full moon tonight........

Gary:  What a great video to watch... just before someone who had loved and lost... begins jumping off their balcony.  Beautiful and sad... all at the same time.  Depending on one's mood or life situation... one could either say "thank you"... or "thanks... you really know how to hurt a girl."  What an incredible and heart-rending song.  Take care...

Carol:  Years ago I did the very same thing.  I moved... and although in many ways it was a very good thing, business-wise... it took me away from the rest of my family.  Every once in a while it hits me... although the thought is almost always way in the back reaches of my mind... every one in a while it hits me... that maybe I should never have left.  And then I wonder... is it too late to go back ?  Thanks for sharing your comment.  (Thanks to you, too, Gary)

Gary, That song and this post were wonderful--and yes, a tissue warning should have been advised.  I make some very deep connections with my clients and I am forever grateful to have these people in my life.

Gary:  It is no accident in my opinion that many teachers move into real estate, since the job tends to be very education oriented anyway.  We are consistantly "teaching" our buyers and sellers about the market, the procedures, how to have a great transaction, etc.  My most humbling experiences in this business have been with clients who loved to put me in that mentoring role and took my advice (surprise:  there are some who don't - LOL).  Thanks as always for a thought-provoking, tear-generating post!  ;-)  Steve

Tony & Darcy: You said it so well. Life has many bonds in it. Some very strong. When we create bonds that are like family, it is a very close connection.

Carol: If family is a higher value than career, that must be recognized and decisions based on that. I think we all get stuck in pursuing the career and forget about family. If family is more important we can easily make a misstep.

Liz: Maybe I should have been a country singer or composer. I see some Realtors like you say with the business like approach working better with builders and developers too. I specifically know some who couldn't do the touchy feely side of residential and are now in commercial. I think you can be successful in both.

Karen Anne: Never have regrets. We make decisions. Sometimes we look back and say maybe we shouldn't have done this or that. But look forward and make your "Next" decision based on where you are today. I hope I didn't hurt you anyway, it's just emotional food for thought, and like you said depending on where you are in life means different things. We are all in this together and you have all the support of us. Strong bonds definitely hurt when eventually due to life's circumstances are broken.

Jesse: Thanks, I keep writing what is in my head.

Carole: Deep connections are good, and show how much you care.

Steve: I like it when you said as a teacher they "don't" take your advice. You can lead a horse to water...Sometimes they take your advice when they see what they are trying to do isn't working and they come back to you again.

Gary~This has really touched me in such a way that I'm sitting here sobbing.:::Tissues Please:::  What a wonderful place of peace and serenity in our lives to know that when we climb a thousand walls for the people in our lives, we are making such an impact on their lives and that is a place I love to visit. Thank you Gary, for all that you do to bless our lives each day in the rain.

Gary - As always, you have such a gift for bringing so much meaning to our relationships.  I feel so fortunate to share such a personal, and often emotional, process with my clients.  Like you said, we may not always remain connected, but I'll do my best to make our time together as positive as it can be through my commitment to be of service.

That is what I love about real estate, I get to meet people that I would probably have never met otherwise.  I have worked with some of the greatest people!

Mike: Strong bonds make you know that you are delivering high levels of service. A servant's heart is I believe what they call it.

Julie: Oh Julie, I didn't mean to get you to tears, but an emotional connection we have with those we truly care about does show what lengths we will go for them. When clients feel like family I know you have really made that "connection." This is a talent I know you are extraordinarily good at.

Lynn: Each side sharing a little about their personal life makes us all more human. They will remember you even if over time you drift apart, I guarantee it. It's just because of the time you spent with them and your caring.

Patricia: It's a people business for sure, which makes every day so interesting!!

One of the earliest and hardest lessons new teachers must learn is how to let go. A good teacher gives their all in the interest of their current students, but the goal is to help their students move on to bigger and better things, much like getting clients past looking for a home and on into living in one.

Rosario: True words spoken from the perspective of one who teaches well. In leadership they say you just don't point the way but show them how to get there. Living in a home vs. looking for a home paints a vision.

Gary, you write such profound posts....... I can't help but wonder? Are you a therapist on the side, a preacher, or

just a kind and sensitive man?

Gary, this is true. It is a bit magical. How wonderful for us to be in a position of sharing when people are acquiring one of the most important necessities in their lives. How fulfilling it is to share in their happiness. How fun it is to drive through neighborhoods and know you helped to shape that very neighborhood by helping to populate it! Cool. Great thoughts. Of course, I would expect nothing less...from you.

Deb: Shaping a neighborhood. That is a great way to look at it. Being the local expert we even sell the same houses multiple times.
