Hit That Bulldog With A Big Stick

BulldogThis is not a post about animal cruelty. In working with buyers and other agents in Real Estate I appreciate everyone's tenacity and persistence towards a goal. But I had one thing happen once in life to me where I learned when enough is enough.

It was like a bulldog with a bone. In my case it was a pit bull and almost a piece of my leg. I was walking my yellow Labrador Retriever in the neighborhood when all of a sudden bounding across the lawns in attack mode was this pit bull. It sunk its teeth into the belly of my Lab and in an instant I was in the middle of a dog fight. I know what an adrenaline rush is for sure. Using my leg and kicking the pit bull forcefully I finally got the dogs separated. How I didn't get bit is beyond me? My dog required nine stitches at the vet.

Lesson learned. Next time when walking in uncertain neighborhoods carry along with you a big stick.

This goes back to freeing yourself from jams that are not working. You need a stick to whack that bulldog and move on. I don't know how many buyers and other agents I see in so many instances that won't let go of something like that pit bull. Tenacity is one thing. Reality is another. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over that's not working.

Remember that letting go is not giving up or retreating, it is just repositioning yourself to again move forward. Try letting go a lot more often and see how much further you end up in the long run.

Gary, once again, your humor added to a post that is very serious, loved it. Some agents really don't know when to let go - and I have been guilty of that a couple times!  -Carla

PS How is your lab doing? You were VERY lucky to escape that one!

Gary, I agree with Carla... your humor helps to smooth a bad situation. It sounds like you handled it very well and remained calm. How is you lab??? What happened with the other dog? Did the owner pay your vet bills?

Gary - Teddy Roosevelt said "speak softly and carry a big stick" was he talking really state   real estate???

Carla: I was lucky with that incident. This is actually a pretty old story in my life. Our beloved "Sunshine" dog passed away back in 1999, but she gave us many years of joy : )

Sharon: The other dog ran off and I don't know who the owner was.

Carol: TR was a wise man. Maybe he was ahead of his time and was thinking really state ; )

Gary, Great advice!  You are lucky you didn't get bit.  Hope your Lab is ok!

Oh my gosh, I would freak out seeing a pit bull running towards me!  I think it's so difficult for some people to let go and just move on.  You have to cut your losses and move forward before you lose more time, money, or whatever is at stake.

Gary-sometimes in this business you need a big stick to knock some sense into agents to keep up with their side of the deal.  When it goes wrong they want you to pick up the slack and take the heat for their mistakes.  Whack upside the head!

Roberta: In that incident I was lucky the dog didn't sink its teeth into me, but my dog after the veterinarian was ok.

Patricia: There is truly something as an adrenaline rush. You get this burst of energy until it is over. You do have to move on and cut your losses.

Cindy: I think we all need the big sticks : )

Gary - I like what you said letting go is reposition oneself to move forward, I will keep this in mind.

Letting go can be soooo difficult. There's always that big "what if"hanging out there! But when you look back..you wonder why you didn't do it sooner!!

Isn't reassessing and changing course a much more thoughtful approach vs. continuing down the same rocky road?  Of course.  It's also not about giving up, but moving forward in a smart fashion

Knowing when to let go is an art in itself.  You don't want to let go prematurely, but holding on too long can seriously complicate matters.

Gary, I am on my way to the office and there is a bulldog there that needs to whacked with the stick. . .  I have been in your shoes as far as walking my dog and a dog coming to attack him.  It is a very scary feeling and amazing how your protection mode kicks in.

Gary,

I really am a very tenacious person especially in real estate. I tend to not let go until there is not a breath left in the transaction. Recently, we had a contract that should have been easy. The co-operating realtor threw a monkey wrench into it and it crashed. But guess what! Life came back last Thursday and it's closing tomorrow. YEA!!

Jennifer: Repositioning gets you going forward again.

Joan: I agree, that we need to move faster.

Liz: That's funny.

Jesse: Working smart is what it is all about.

Rosario: Very true.

Audrey: Whack away, and stay out of dog fights :)

Becky: You are tough. Don't mess with you : )

Fran: A Kenny Rogers fan in our midst.

Gary- another great post!  Wonderful analogy!  One of my favorite real estate moments was when I fired a client!  How empowering!  He was only interested in making stupid offers, with no intention of negotiating from a ridiculously low starting point.  Even by today's market standards, it was ridiculously low.  When he called to find out the result of his offer, I said the counter offer expired because he had been out of touch for a week with no way for me to contact him.  I had to tell him several times on the phone that I was not the realtor for him, and I would be happy to refer him to some one else.  He finally got the message.  I have no idea if he ever bought or not, but what a great feeling to tell someone no!!

Carol: You are my hero. An agent who fires a client. I know you are a good businesswoman! You do not have to mess around with the idiots. You went as far as you could and exited this relationship. GOOD FOR YOU.... Keep you big stick always ready and willing to wallop someone...
