Something for your Bucket List ~ The Great State Fair of Texas

Gary State FairIn the movie Bucket List with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, who are both dying with terminal illnesses they list all the things they want to do in their life before they "kick the bucket." As a writer, Realtor, and a person, if you've read me over time, you know I stand out like a sore thumb in doing my own thing. I almost never write Localism posts, because, well because they are not my thing. I tried to hide that I had a birthday Saturday, but darn if I didn't have many friends here that found out anyway. No big Jason Crouch barbeques for me. It's not who I am. But as far as Localism I do like "fun" events. In the Texas area I have over 25 years of fun things I have attended and this year's visit to the Great State Fair of Texas I observed smiles everywhere. From old people to the youngest of the young, out of towners and locals, and even both sides of college football fans. The largest state fair in the U.S. is in Texas and in Dallas. Trust me, from about Oct. 1 till about the 19th each year, PUT THIS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. It's great!!!

Gary, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, albeit belated:)  I used to go the State Fair each year when I lived in Missouri. I had so much fun.  I had no idea Dallas has the largest. I will put this on my bucket list!  That is one TALL cowboy!

That movie was great. Trying to keep your birthday under wraps?! Nice try.

Gary - I saw this foortball field on the big screen yesterday when we went to see The Express (Ernie Davis Movie). My husband was quick to point out that this is where the Texas state fair is held - he's been there and says it's awesome!

Gary - No big barbeques?!?  Oh well.  I was born and raised in Dallas, so I am well-acquainted with the State Fair.  We had "Fair Day" (which meant a day off from school) when I was growing up.  I need to bring my kids to the fair!

Elizabeth:

Christopher and Stephanie: The boots on Big Tex I think are like 15 feet tall. Amazing.

Lenn: You are always one of my favorite smiling ones in the Rain.

Trunda: Nothing top secret here in the Rain.

Carol: When in town in October, do step into this environment. It is a great place to relax.

Pat: You do fine with your comments. Yes, that Susan friend of ours can let secrets out. But she's precious like you Pat. This state fair was great and thanks for the birthday wishes. Keeping the tank with reserves in it is tricky for all of us of course. But be aware if you do have some in there it helps out on the tough days. I'll let the spotlight come around. It's just not something I seek. Keep us posted on your next birthday? 30 yr old for you??

Hi Jason: I think they still have the Fair Days for the school districts around here. We save the BIG barbeques for your honor Jason!! : ) Yes, your kids need to see the Fair. A quick drive up the interstate. We had tons of people from Austin there Saturday.

Gary-It looks like it would really be fun. I haven't seen the movie Bucket List yet, but I guess I better go get it. Morgan Freeman is a good actor.  Hope you enjoyed your day at the Fair.

Wow Gary,

I sometimes forget how Texas does things "BIG".

Who couldn't enjoy a day at a fair that large?

There is nothing more fun than eating your way through the fair grounds! I am normally not a huge junk food junkie, but turn me loose at the fair...it is not pretty! I turn into a total junk food chow hound!

I have never been to a State Fair.  I guess I should add it to my list! County Fairs are fun also, but didn't get the chance this year. My husbands favorite thing about the fair is the food. The grilling of onions and all that grease. BTW Happy Blated BD!

I was born in Dallas too, and used to go to the fair.  Didn't "Big Tex" used to have a red shirt?
